How to Travel Safely with Your Pet: A Slow Travel Guide

Make your pet's holiday great

Hello, slow travelers! Today we want to talk about a very special topic: how to travel safely with your pet and make the most of the experience. Because yes, we know there’s nothing like sharing adventures with our furry friends. So, pack your bags and keep reading to discover how to travel safely and enjoy the journey together.

For us, traveling is always a shared experience. My partner, Justyna, and I (Marc) are fortunate enough to share our getaways with our dog, Rulo. Rulo is much more than a pet; he’s part of our family, and every adventure is more complete when he’s by our side. From his first trips until today, we’ve learned how important it is to make sure that Rulo enjoys the journey as much as we do and is always safe. We want to share some tips we’ve gathered from our adventures together.

1. Choosing the Right Destination

First things first: choose a pet-friendly destination. Not all places are prepared to welcome our four-legged friends, so it’s important to find options that offer them comfort and safety. On Almas Locales, we highlight accommodations that accept pets, so you won’t have trouble finding the perfect spot.

We always look for places where Rulo is not only welcome but has space to enjoy himself. For example, during our last stay at a rural house in Asturias, Rulo was able to run freely through the fields and make new friends in the village. Watching him enjoy it was just as fun as it was for us to disconnect from the city’s stress.

If you’re traveling abroad, don’t forget to check the necessary documentation and vaccines for your pet. Each country has its own requirements, and being prepared will avoid setbacks.

2. The Ideal Mode of Transport

Transportation can be a challenge, but with the right preparation, everything will go smoothly (or in this case, on paws). If you’re traveling by car, make sure your pet is comfortable and secure, whether in a carrier or with a special harness. We always make frequent stops so Rulo can stretch his legs, hydrate, and get some fresh air. These small breaks are essential to keep him calm during the trip.

If you’re traveling by train or plane, check the company’s policies and book in advance. And of course, don’t forget your pet’s ticket. Sometimes Rulo gets a little nervous on the train, so we always bring his favorite toy and a blanket that smells like home to make him feel more comfortable.

3. Useful Gadgets and Items for the Trip

To make the trip easier, there are some gadgets that have become our best allies:

  • Portable water bottle and bowl: Keep your pet hydrated without hassle.
  • Comfortable carrier: One that’s easy to carry and where your pet feels comfortable.
  • Portable bed: So your furry friend can rest anywhere.
  • Toys and snacks: Keep your furry friend entertained and happy during the trip.
  • LED collar: To keep your pet visible during nighttime walks.
  • GPS tracker: To always know where your pet is, especially in new places.
  • Flea and tick protection products: Protect your pet during outdoor adventures.

Whenever we go out, we bring the full kit to make sure Rulo has everything he needs. During one of our trips to the Pyrenees, a good water bottle and his portable bed were essential to ensure he enjoyed the hikes without getting too tired.

4. Informing the Host

Before arriving at your accommodation, inform the host about your pet. This way, they can prepare everything for your arrival and ensure there are no issues. Some places even offer additional services for pets, such as special beds, food, or water bowls. In our experience, open communication has always made the stay more comfortable for everyone.

5. Health Documentation and Nearby Veterinarians

Don’t forget to bring your pet’s health records with all their vaccinations up to date. Also, research nearby veterinarians at your destination in case of emergency. We always check the location of veterinary clinics before we leave, to have peace of mind during the trip. We’ve never had to use those services (fortunately), but it’s comforting to know that we’re prepared if anything happens.

6. Enjoy the Slow Travel Experience

And most importantly: enjoy. Traveling with your pet is a unique opportunity to strengthen your bond and create unforgettable memories. Instead of rushing from one place to another, take the time to disconnect, spend quality time with your furry friend, and explore new places together.

Rulo has always been an essential part of our adventures, and seeing him enjoy the experience as much as we do reminds us why we choose to travel slowly and consciously. On one occasion, while we were in a small village in the Sierra de Gredos, Rulo made friends with another local dog, and they spent the afternoon running and playing. For us, those kinds of moments, where we all feel free and at peace, are what make traveling so special.
